Grandmaster Robert James Fischer was an American chess player famous for his candid personality and dominating chess knowledge. He made world history by defeating Soviet Grandmaster Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Championship, becoming the first American World Champion.

Emanuel Lasker (1868 – 1941)

Grandmaster Emanuel Lasker was a German chess player who has the distinction of holding the World Chess Champion title longer than any other player: 27 years! He was known for his psychological approach to chess, often playing inferior moves to confuse and manipulate his opponents.

Mikhail Tal (1936 – 1992)

Soviet Union

Grandmaster Mikhail Tal was a Soviet chess player known for his creative attacking style. In fact, he is considered to be one of the best attacking players in chess history. He was World Chess Champion from 1960 to 1961 and temporarily held the record for longest unbeaten streak at 95 games until 2017.

Paul Morphy (1837 – 1884)

United States

Grandmaster Paul Morphy was an American chess player born and raised in New Orleans. Professionally trained as a lawyer, Morphy is famous for his unmatched chess knowledge and complete domination of players during a tour of Europe. Paul Morphy suffered from depression and other psychological problems after returning to America. There are many legends of how and why he died, but regardless, he is considered to be one of the greatest American chess players that ever lived. His Opera Game is a staple of basic chess training for most instructors almost two-hundred years later.

Susan Polgar (1969 – Present)

Hungary

Grandmaster Susan Polgar is a Hungarian-American former chess player who was the Women’s World Champion from 1996 to 1999. By the age of 15, Susan was the highest ranking female chess player in the world and is the oldest of the famed Polgar Sisters (Susan, Judith, and Sofia). In addition to her chess playing, she is an accomplished author and chess coach.
